wild camping in the Scottish Highlands

Our expert local guide will tailor your wild camping adventure

Our Wild Camping in the Scottish Highlands is so much more than a night in the tent. On our one night Wild Camp you have two days and one night, so why not climb a mountain from your base camp or add a scramble?

You can choose between one or two nights, maybe take a train to Scotland’s remotest station (it has no road near it!) and walk back through the glens and mountains?

Wild Camping

Just book your one night or two night wild camp and pay at the checkout and we will contact you to find out what adventures you want either side of your wild camp. You might want a mountain peak or a scramble. Tent, sleeping bags, mats and food all included.

Local guide for Ben Nevis

We provide the tent, sleeping bag, mat and ruck-sac. You just need to provide outdoor clothing and boots suitable for the time of year.

We use very high quality lightweight equipment. Our main tents are produced by Hilleberg who arguably make the best lightweight tents in the world.

Our guides are great at making sure you only take what you need and help carry some items for you. But you will need a basic level of fitness.

It’s hard to say exactly how heavy your rucksack will be as we don’t know what clothes you will pack. But it will be as light as possible whilst having enough to make you safe and comfortable.

You need to be able to walk for about 4 hours or more up-hill on rough ground with a heavy rucksack, we can make routes shorter or longer.

We try to match the route and level of challenge to your fitness, but wild camping does need a good basic level of fitness to get to the wild places we love!

This depends on the route, weather and time of year. Wild camping with a tarp can be a magical experience as it gives you a closer connection to our wild Scottish mountains. But tents are better with heavy fog, drizzle and wind. We do use ‘midge tents’ to go under our tarps.

Because we use the very best tents we can get you get more space for the weight than a normal tent.

Our standard tent for guests is the Hilleberg Nallo 4GT as it gives lots of room for the weight of normal smaller two person tents. This means it can keep a family of four warm and dry and give two people a luxurious night.

Ultralight tents tend to be very very small to create the headline grabbing low weight. But, they are cramped and hard to even get changed in.

Our tarps are large and offer great space to weight, but not ideal for strong wind, drizzle and fog.

Midges like very low wind, humidity and hate bright light. So a mild wind, dry air or sunlight will drive them away.

Wild camping high up in the mountains also decreases the probability of midges. But if conditions are right you can get midges at any altitude in Scotland.

We do get some days when nature makes it perfect for the midge. That is why we give FREE Smidge to all our clients who book May to September, the most likely time for midges.

Why not book a ‘rest day’ abseiling, climbing, scrambling and the amazing Tyrolean Traverse across the gorge in Glen Nevis.

All these activities are only a short distance from the road, so great for a low level day that is high in adventure.

Apart from being a customer Wild Mountain Guides is not connected with Nordic Outdoors, we just like what they sell and think this is a great video!
